Will Corning calls hurt Branstad?

Former Gov. Terry Branstad is getting a little more campaign heartburn. His former lieutenant governor, Joy Corning, recorded robo-calls on behalf of One Iowa, a group promoting marriage rights for gays and lesbians. Details are here. The calls have nothing to do with the Branstad campaign, but his association with Corning gives his right-wing critics ammunition to expand their theme that he’s not quite conservative enough.
Branstad associates have told me that he chose Corning — who’s also pro-choice — for his 1990 and 1994 races mainly for her eastern Iowa background and campaign mettle. But her choice at the time was also seen as providing some philosophical balance for Branstad, who was the conservative in the race. Rival 2010 candidate Bob Vander Plaats has already poked at that, saying at his formal campaign announcement in September that he wouldn’t be looking to balance his ticket with a pro-choice running mate.
How big of a problem is this for Branstad? By itself, not much. Most voters put little importance on the choice of a running mate — and even less on past choices. But it adds to the negative publicity he received from his comment about the Commission for the Blind and poor reviews of his performance at last weekend’s GOP dinner. It serves to undermine that mantle of invincibility and give heart to his GOP rivals.
Vander Plaats celebrated Veterans Day by suggesting employers honor vets by hiring them. The Gazette has that here.
